About me

My
Story

As an Iraqi American, navigating the cultural landscapes around me has often been a challenging journey. Growing up, I found it difficult to connect with those around me, often feeling isolated due to cultural differences and preconceived notions. However, I discovered a unique space of belonging through what many perceived as unpopular. I found solace in video games. My first true moment of connection and identity being in 6th grade talking to a peer about minecraft. I suddenly found the sense of self I had garnered in solidarity, my extreme love of video games, cartoons, and art was something of value I could share with those around me, not just my escape.
These points of connection provided a safe haven where I could explore and express my identity beyond the limitations of prejudice. I went from unidentifiable brown girl #3 to Reem, the shy girl who could draw and talk about Winx Club and Naruto. The vibrant worlds and diverse characters in these media resonated with me, offering a sense of community and understanding that transcended cultural barriers. Through these shared experiences, I began to find a sense of self and belonging that felt authentic and liberating.
In my art, I strive to create pieces that reflect this journey of self-discovery and connection, and also pay homage to the media I felt empowered and inspired by. My work blends personalized, niche content with an exploration of colors, aiming to evoke a sense of calm and beauty. Each piece is a celebration of harmony, femininity, and the transformative power of shared tastes and experiences.
By incorporating elements inspired by pop culture and trends, I seek to craft a visual language that speaks to the universal human experience of seeking connection and understanding. My art serves as a bridge between cultures, blending modernity with beloved media. Through my creations, I hope to inspire others to find their own sense of self and connection, just as I have.
